History

Blackheath is the highest town in the Blue Mountains. Governor Macquarie, on his epic journey across the newly built Cox's Road in 1815, named the area Hounslow on his way west, & Blackheath on the way home. Nobody queried him.

The Scotch Thistle Inn was established in 1833 by ex-soldier Andrew Gardner, gaining a reputation for comfort & cleanliness.

A large stockade was set up in the 1840's for convicts & soldiers working on upgrades to the road. The commandant was Capt. Bull, who previously ran what became known as "Bull's Camp" near Woodford.

Following the arrival of the railway, the plateau's clean air and more English climate attracted the attention of gentlemen desirous of a retreat from the city.
