Welcome to the Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains Australia

Lapstone
81m 265ft, 57min. from Sydney, 34min. from Parramatta

Lapstone Hill has been the site of three different railway routes up the escarpment, the first being a zig zag (switchback). It has also had five different road routes, four of which are still used.

Historic Knapsack Viaduct may be accessed via the Emu Plains motorway exit. Nearby are the ruins of the gatekeepers cottage, and the John Whitton Memorial. Visitors may hike up the Lapstone Zig Zag railway route.

Lennox Bridge, the oldest bridge on the mainland, is located on Mitchell's Pass. It may be accessed by turning right off the highway at McDonalds, Blaxland. The road below the bridge, one-way traffic, comes out at Knapsack Viaduct.

Best views are from the left side of the carriage when coming from Sydney, with the climb up Glenbrook Gorge forming a fitting gateway to the Blue Mountains.

Glenbrook
163m 535ft, 1:01 from Sydney, 38min from Parramatta

Located on the top of the eastern escarpment, Glenbrook is regarded as the gateway to the Blue Mountains. Here you will find a tourist information centre, national park visitor's centre, and a variety of bushwalking (hiking) opportunities. Map...

Swimming in Jellybean Pool, a rock-pool in Glenbrook Gorge, is popular in summer. Views of the Nepean River and Glenbrook Gorge are available from several lookouts both within & outside the the national park.

At the Ampol Service Station is a sandstone house, the former Station Master's cottage. The railway station was on the north side of the highway, opposite the tourist information centre. A short distance east, the old railway tunnel, now a mushroom farm, passes under the highway.

Station Masters Cottage, Glenbrook Station Master's cottage at Glenbrook.
Made from local sandstone, it has the high iron roof and verandah typical of rural architecture of the day.
Used for many years as a service station, it was restored with the building of the new Ampol outlet.
