Main Western Line (CityRail & CountryLink)

Government owned electrified line, formally The Great Western Railway. CityRail air-conditioned double-decker passenger trains provide regular services between Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Also used by the Indian Pacific passenger service (Australian National Railways) which crosses Australia from coast to coast, CountryLink services to western New South Wales, plus coal and general freight services operated by State Rail, Australian National Railways, & private companies.

3801 Ltd

3801 Ltd own and operate the historic 38 class streamlined steam locomotive 3801, along with period rolling stock. They run main-line excursions to various destinations, including the Blue Mountains.

Katoomba Scenic Railway

Tourist railway and steepest incline railway in the world (Guiness Book of Records). Originally part of the Katoomba mining tramways constructed between 1880 and 1900. Descends through sandstone cliffs via a rock tunnel, emerges to spectacular views and bushwalking tracks.

Lithgow Zig Zag (The Great Zig Zag)

Steam train on Lithgow Zig Zag tourist railway, Blue Mountains

Tourist steam railway. Originally part of the Main Western Line, and a major engineering achievement of its time, the Lithgow Zig-Zag (or switch-back) descends the western escarpment of the Blue Mountains.

Prominent features include sandstone viaducts, cuttings, tunnel and cliffs. Steam hauled services at weekends, public holidays, & NSW school holidays, midweek diesel railmotor service includes site and workshop tours.

Connects with CityRail services to Sydney.

 

Mountains Heritage Express

Operated by the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum, the Mountains Heritage Express periodically provides main-line steam train excursions to the Blue Mountains.
