Appointed Engineer-in-Chief for Railways, in 1857, at £1500/year. Known as "The Father of NSW Railways". Arrived in 1856, aged 35, with assistant engineers Barton, Bridgeman, Druitt & Mason. In his 33 year career, over 2000 miles (3200km) of railway were built, an investment of £30 million sterling.
