Walks around the Katoomba Scenic Railway

Federal Pass

The bottom of the Scenic Railway is in rainforest. It is adjacent to the Federal Pass, a foot track running below the cliffs from Leura to Katoomba then on to Narrow Neck, the Ruined Castle, & beyond.

The pass may be accessed, via stairs, from several cliff-top locations. Most are accessible by bus, thus eliminating the need to walk a full circle.

For more information, see our Federal Pass page...

The walk to the base of Katoomba Falls takes only about 10 minutes, passing an abandoned coal mine adit and the base of Furber Steps along the way. A short walk in the other direction will bring you to an historic coal mining display & rainforest boardwalk.

Furber Steps

The path to  Furber Steps leaves Cliff Drive near the kiosk at Katoomba Falls Reserve, about 10 minutes walk from the top of the Scenic Railway. It is the shortest walk from the cliff-tops to the base of the Scenic Railway, & offers the best views of Katoomba Falls.

For more information, see our Furber Steps page...

Explorer Bus - multiple stops.
Stops at near Furber Steps, Giant Stairway, & Scenic Railway top platform.

Giant Stairway

Commencing from Echo Point, the Giant Stairway provides a dramatic descent into the valley, before joining up with Federal Pass (see above).

For more information, see our Giant Stairway page...

Rainforest Walk

A short boardwalk has been constructed through the rainforest.

Narrow Neck & Beyond

Federal Pass continues west, then turns south along the base of Narrow Neck Peninsular. The Golden Stairs lead up to San Rafael Drive on Narrow Neck. Beyond there, the path continues along the route of the old tramway to the Ruined Castle, a full day's return hike. For EXPERIENCED bush navigators, it is possible to continue on to King's Tableland & Wentworth Falls.
