This story was related to me by my Aunt Molly -- Mary L. Martin, late of Geelong in Victoria. I recount it to the best of my memory.
During World War 2, Molly often made use of Reginald Ansett's air service between Hamilton, where she worked as a nurse, and Melbourne.
The aircraft was a single engine job, able to carry about half a dozen passengers. Pilots were very hard to come by in the war, and Ansett had been loaned an RAF pilot who was on loan to the RAAF. Ansett disliked the pilot, but couldn't replace him. The pilot wanted to be in active military service, disliked Ansett, and knew he couldn't be fired.
Running late on one occasion, Molly phoned the airport and asked if the 'plane could wait a few minutes. On being told, the pilot shut down the engine, and waited about five minutes for Molly to arrive.
A couple of weeks earlier, Ansett had been running late, and phoned with the same request. Even though Ansett's car chased the 'plane down the runway, it took off without him. No doubt he heard about the pilot waiting for Aunt Molly, but with a different reaction to Molly's when she was told about him!
