News: Garratt 6029 -- up close and personal!

Garratt 6029

Extra Open Day on Sunday 20 October

Want to see Australia’s biggest operating steam locomotive up close, from a safe angle? Take a trip on Sunday 20/10 to Valley Heights Rail Museum. There’s plenty of time to visit before or after your ride on the Penrith-Springwood shuttles behind giant Beyer-Garratt loco 6029.  A family-friendly viewing area is set up for a great experience or you can take a ride on the heritage-listed Steam Tram for unique photo opportunities of the passing train. Stay around and do both? There’s time to explore all the great exhibits and activities at the museum: model rooms; artefacts & memorabilia; artworks; audio-visual displays and more. Join the friendly volunteers in the café for a hot or cold drink, snack or ice cream and browse the shop for that special gift or souvenir.

Join the action at Tusculum Road, Valley Heights, open from 10:00 (last admission 15:30) for a unique experience when Beyer Garratt 6029 leads a Penrtith – Springwood shuttle train.

  • Ride the Steam Tram on a parallel run through Valley Heights
  • Capture a unique photo of the steam shuttle -- from locations you cannot access except from the tram in motion
  • Use a unique vantage point in the museum to view the steam shuttle as it passes close by

The steam shuttle is timetabled to pass Valley Heights at:

  • 10:25
  • 11:45
  • 13:25
  • 14:45
  • 16:05

Be at Valley Heights at least 30 minutes in advance to get a seat on the Steam Tram for the parallel run.

Normal entry fees apply
